Course Objectives: In this course we will look at the principles, techniques, history and literature of the theatre.  You will read theatre, attend live theatre, and create theatre.  The goal is to develop methods of evaluating and appreciating theatrical art and its history, and to begin to understand what goes into creating it.

This class is part of the Learning Community titled “Stages of Communication: Theatre and the German Language”.  It is linked with Professor Koerner's German 101 class. We will occasionally be coordinating assignments, and I will often attend Dr. Koerner's class.

Course Requirements: 2 tests, and several projects, both inside and outside of class.  You are also required to see three Theatre department productions.  You will write performance reviews of these plays, as well as write two responses to plays we read for class. Each due date, time will be allotted to discuss the play seen.  There is also a Final Project, for which you will create a piece of theatre.  For other requirements, see “Evaluation” below.

See the “Review/Response Paper Guide” online for my policy on late papers.

Course Texts: All the plays listed on the syllabus are available at the bookstore, except for Peer Pleasures, which will be online.  Our textbook is The World of Theatre, by Felner and Orenstein.  Class notes will be accessible at our web page.

Absences (starting with the second) in the synthesis seminar with Jessica McClellan will count as an absence in this course or in German 101 with Dr. Koerner.
