History and
Literature of the Theatre 1 Assignments
Readings
First of all, don't fall behind.
You'll regret it later. In past classes people have gotten together once
a week to read the plays together. I think that's an excellent idea. You'll
get it all done at once and be done with it. Plus, it always helps to hear
plays out loud. Second, read the text assignments. The things I talk about
in class will make much more sense, and you'll be able to ask intelligent
questions, which always impresses me ;-). Look for the terms on the Reading
Guides and for general trends the text discusses. You never have to know
names or dates unless I talk about them in class.
Exams
I do not give multiple choice
exams. They are all writing, so come with plenty of paper (no blue books,
for reasons I will explain), and a warmed-up hand. My exams are about application
of knowledge. Trace a trend, or what can you tell me about one thing based
on what you know about something else, etc. I will give out sample essay
questions before each exam. The exams are some short answer, and some long
answer. Other than very specific dates that I will be clear about, I will
not ask you dates. That's why they invented reference books. I know, it
sounds horrible, but if you ask people who have taken my exams in the past,
they're really not bad. General exam-taking tips - use these for
all your exams! Mid-term

This class bulletin board is
designed to aid in class discussion. There is a lot of information to cover,
and not as much time to discuss things as we might like, so this helps to
take up some of the slack. If you make it a habit of going to the board
after you finish each set of readings and responding to the question there,
class discussion will go much more smoothly, since we will have already
begun talking about relevant issues. Let me know if you have difficulty
signing on.
